There has been little to concern Liverpool about the prospect of going toe-to-toe with their closest rivals this season as Jürgen Klopp’s record in outmanoeuvring opponents illustrates.
Put Liverpool up against Manchester City on the pitch and they’ll harass and defy them. Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton will say likewise.
Yet Liverpool need that air of authority to carry over into the summer months for once and when it comes to competing in the transfer market with those same foes, emerge not only unscathed but cherishing some more landmark victories. It will prove a tall order.
Klopp will seek to spend big before next term and will be lavished with the largest transfer kitty in the club’s history. There is no definitive figure on the sums being made available, but it is set to be a vast amount, with the penny having dropped that proven players need to be recruited rather than more arrivals with potential.
